4 moving tips to prepare for a stress-free move
Moving is stressful. In fact, a recent study found moving is the most stressful event in life, above going through a breakup or having kids.
The good news is with a little pre-planning and organization, your move doesn’t have to be such a pain. To help, we created four moving tips to prepare for a stress-free move.
Create a pre-move and post-move checklist
Congrats! You found your new home. As exciting as it is, the thought of logistics kicks in, and it can feel daunting. This is where a pre-move checklist comes in handy.
Sit down with a piece of paper (or your notes app) and develop a room-by-room packing strategy. You’ll also want to hire a moving company or ask friends and family to help, request time off from work, order change of address cards, start ordering boxes, tape, and other moving supplies, and more.
Declutter first
Moving is the perfect time to declutter. After all, you don’t want the clutter to follow you to your new home. Before packing, evaluate what items you wish to bring with you and what items you might want to donate, sell, or trash.
Sometimes it can be challenging to declutter, especially if certain items hold special memories or provide a sense of comfort and security. Really think about that last time you used the item. If it was more than a year ago, it’s time to let it go. If it holds special memories, we recommend taking a photo of the item and acknowledging that the memories can still live on without the physical object.
Pack smart
Although it might be tempting to throw all your belongings in boxes and tape them up as quickly as possible, it’s going to become quite a pain to unbox.
We recommend not only labeling your boxes but also color-coding them with stickers. That way, you can spot where each box belongs from a mile away. Start packing the rooms you don’t often use first, like the guest bedroom/bathroom, storage closet, basement, attic and seasonal clothing in your closet. Save the spaces you use the most, such as the bathroom, bedroom, and kitchen, for last.
Hire a Professional Organizer
If you hate the process of packing, unpacking, and figuring out where things belong, you may want to consider a professional organizer. Services like Luxury Pro Organizer will create a stress-free moving plan, including sorting, organizing, packing, and labeling boxes for movers, and the unpacking, organizing, and styling of your new space. They’ll also return as often as you wish to maintain the order. Ready to get started?
