Efficient Holiday Storage: Organizing and Storing Your Seasonal Decor

We just had three months of back-to-back decorating occasions. The holiday season has come to an end, and it's time to put away the festive decorations. Follow these simple steps to organize and store your Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year's Eve, Thanksgiving, and Halloween items efficiently.

three months of festivities

Today is the day to gather all of the holiday décor, the lights, the gift wrap, the ornaments, and the leftover paper plates and confetti. You will determine how to store it based on how many items you have for each holiday. Go around your home and gather all of the Christmas or Hanukkah items and place them in one or two containers or in one pile somewhere that is not in the way. Do not try to organize it yet. Just gather in one place so you can see it all. Repeat this step with all the New Year’s Eve, Thanksgiving, and Halloween items, depending on what you celebrate. Once you have collected and sorted the items for each of the occasions, take a few photos of how much you have for each of the occasions.

Step 1: Gather all the items for each occasion and place them in separate containers or a designated pile in a room.

Step 2: Assess each collection and decide what to keep. Discard any items that may not withstand storage for another year, such as candy, broken ornaments, or potted plants. Consider taking photos for sentimental memories before disposing of them.

Step 3: Categorize the remaining items for each occasion. This will help determine the appropriate size storage containers needed.

Step 4: Choose solid-colored storage containers to maintain a clean and consistent look. Label the containers clearly with a consistent font, font size, and label size.

Step 5: Place the items into the designated storage containers, ensuring they fit nicely on shelves or within the designated storage space.

Start with the Christmas or Hanukkah items. Go through all the items and decide what you want to keep. Is there anything that may not make it through the one-year storage period? Examples: candy, broken ornaments, or live Poinsettias that you do not plant. You may want to take a photo for memory before you trash the item. Next, put the remaining items into categories. This will make it obvious what size containers you need to store them in.

Consider creating a single storage area for all your holiday decor, using separate containers for each occasion. This will allow for easier access and organization.

Repeat these steps for each occasion, such as New Year's Eve items, following the same process of assessing, categorizing, and storing.

Efficiently organizing and storing your holiday decorations will not only help preserve them but also make future decorating a breeze. Enjoy a clutter-free home and a stress-free holiday season year after year.
